Decking

Cedar is an excellent choice for decking.  Beautiful, decay-resistant, and easy to use, it will add value to any outdoor design.  LS Cedar stocks an extensive array of western red cedar decking products.  Varying widths and thicknesses, as well as different grades, offer many choices.  When choosing, it is a good idea to consider the overall size of the deck, as well as the design characteristics of the project.  Narrow dimensions work best for smaller jobs, and wider stock lends itself well to large areas and rustic designs.  Knotty grades are well-suited for any project, while the higher-end clears give a more formal look.

LS Cedar stocks the following sizes and grades of cedar decking:

                                                                   KILN-DRIED
TIGHT KNOT
       GREEN CLEAR       VERTICAL GRAIN

    5/4 x 4                5/4 x 4                 5/4 x 4

       2 x 4                   2 x 4                   2 x 3

       2 x 6                   2 x 4                   2 x 4

Conversion Factors for Figuring Quantities of Decking

To determine the amount of material to cover a given area, the following simple conversions apply:

Divide 12 by the coverage in inches (width of lumber plus gap) to get lineal feet required per square foot.

Examples
:

4” nominal stock is 3-1/2” wide.  With a ¼” gap you would divide 12 by 3.75, which gives you 3.24 lineal feet per square foot.

6” nominal stock is 5-1/2” wide.  So with a ¼” gap you would divide 12 by 5.75, to give you 2.18 lineal feet per square foot.

Note:  ¼” or wider gaps are best, so that debris will fall through, making cleaning and maintenance easier.

Railings

Railings are both beautiful and necessary components of deck projects.  A sturdy railing helps define the space, and building codes usually require them for safety reasons.  There are many designs used, and LS Cedar stocks everything you need to construct any of them.  Here are examples:
